Grand Traverse County is located in the central region of Michigan. The county seat of Grand Traverse County is Traverse City. The overall area of the county is about 601 square miles. Established in 1851 from part of Omeena County, today Grand Traverse County counts over 96 thousand inhabitants. The county is named after French grande traverse (long crossing), given first to Grand Traverse Bay by French voyageurs.
