The county was formed in 1818 from part of Wayne County, and it is populated today by 11 thousand residents. St. Ignace is the county seat of Mackinac County. The county is named after Originally Michilimackinac, a French interpretation of the Native American name for Mackinac Island, meaning big turtle.
