Alleghany County is situated on the northern border of North Carolina. The area of Alleghany County is about 236 square miles. The county was set up in 1859 from Ashe County, and it is populated today by 11 thousand residents. Sparta is the county seat of Alleghany County. The county is named after a corruption of the Delaware Indian name for the Allegheny and Ohio Rivers and is said to have meant a fine stream.
