The county was formed in 1911 from Caldwell County, Mitchell County, and Watauga County, and it is populated today by 18 thousand residents. Newland is the county seat of Avery County. The county is named after Waightstill Avery (1741-1821), a soldier of the Revolution and Attorney General of North Carolina.
