Avery County is situated in the western region of North Carolina. The area of Avery County is about 247 square miles. The county was formed in 1911 from Caldwell County, Mitchell County, and Watauga County, and it is populated today by 18 thousand residents. Newland is the county seat of Avery County. The county is named after Waightstill Avery (1741-1821), a soldier of the Revolution and Attorney General of North Carolina.
