Gates County is situated in the northeastern section of North Carolina. The county is named after Horatio Gates (1727-1806), an American general during the Revolution. The area of Gates County is about 346 square miles. The county was formed in 1779 from Chowan County, Hertford County, and Perquimans County, and it is populated today by 10 thousand residents.
