Martin County is situated in the eastern part of North Carolina. The county is named after Josiah Martin (1737-1786), the last governor of colonial North Carolina. The area of Martin County is about 461 square miles. The county was set up in 1774 from Halifax County and Tyrrell County, and it is populated today by 22 thousand residents.
