Washington Township is located in Gloucester County, New Jersey, about 18 miles south of Philadelphia. It is one of the larger townships in the state, covering an area of approximately 23 square miles (60 km²). Washington Township was incorporated as a township by an act of the New Jersey Legislature on February 17, 1836, from portions of Deptford Township. The township is named after George Washington, the first President of the United States. Today Washington Township is home to 49 thousand residents.
