Qatar agreed to expel Hamas leadership from the country at the request of the United States. The group's leaders have been based there for the past 12 years
The Qatari authorities have agreed to expel Hamas leadership from the country at the request of the United States after repeated attempts to force the leaders of the terrorist movement to agree to a ceasefire deal and the release of Israeli hostages. This is reported by CNN, Reuters, the Financial Times and the Times of Israel, citing sources.
About two weeks ago, US officials told their Qatari counterparts that they should stop giving shelter to Hamas leaders, CNN writes. About a week ago, Qatar agreed and notified the terrorist group, the channel's sources say. CNN notes that the request from US officials came after Hamas leaders rejected repeated offers to release Israeli hostages, which was a priority for US President Joe Biden.
A senior Hamas official has called reports that Qatar has agreed to expel the group's leadership from Doha "baseless." He called it a "pressure tactic," adding that similar claims have been made before without supporting evidence.
It remains unclear when exactly the Hamas leaders will be expelled from Qatar and where they will go. According to one of CNN's sources, the group has been given little time to leave the country. Turkey is being considered as a possible option, but the US is unlikely to approve this scenario, CNN writes. The Times of Israel notes that Iran, Oman, Lebanon, and Algeria have also been mentioned as options, but these countries have also not been satisfactory to the US.
The Hamas leadership has been based in Doha since 2012, when it was forced to leave its headquarters in Damascus due to the civil war in Syria, and the US asked the Qatari authorities to become a channel for communication with the terrorist group.
