The “Big Dig” was a massive infrastructure project in Boston that rerouted the city’s main highway into an underground tunnel. It was one of the most complex and expensive public works projects in U.S. history. Though controversial during construction, the Big Dig ultimately removed a major highway from downtown, opening space for parks and reconnecting neighborhoods. It significantly reshaped the city’s layout and appearance.
