What is the political status of Palestine?

The political status of Palestine is complex and contested. The Palestinian territories—West Bank and Gaza Strip—are governed separately by the Palestinian Authority and Hamas, respectively. While many countries and international organizations recognize Palestine as a sovereign state, it is not universally recognized, and it does not have full UN membership. Israel controls much of the West Bank through settlements and military presence, leading to ongoing disputes. The peace process aims to resolve these issues but has faced many setbacks over the years. The situation remains a central focus of Middle Eastern politics.
