The Colosseum did not have a permanent roof, but it featured a retractable awning system called the "velarium." This massive canvas covering was operated by Roman sailors and stretched across parts of the seating area to provide shade. The velarium protected spectators from the sun and added to the comfort of the venue. The engineering of the velarium was advanced and required significant manpower. Remnants of the support poles can still be seen today.
