How was Cahokia discovered and studied?

Cahokia has been known to European settlers since the 17th century, but it wasn’t until the 19th and 20th centuries that serious archaeological investigations began. Early excavations helped identify the scale and complexity of the site. Over time, researchers uncovered evidence of homes, ceremonial structures, tools, pottery, and trade items. Archaeological methods have evolved, allowing for more detailed and respectful exploration. Today, the Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site is managed by Illinois and includes a museum and interpretive center that educate the public about the site’s significance.
