How were the stones of Stonehenge transported?

The larger sarsen stones, weighing up to 25 tons, are believed to have been transported from the Marlborough Downs, about 20 miles away, using a combination of sledges, rollers, and manpower. The smaller bluestones, which weigh up to 4 tons, originated in the Preseli Hills of Wales, over 150 miles away. The transport of these stones remains a subject of research, but most experts believe they were moved using a mix of land and river routes, demonstrating remarkable planning and effort by ancient people.
