The Cahokians had a diverse diet based on agriculture, hunting, and gathering. Their primary crop was maize (corn), which was supplemented by beans, squash, sunflowers, and other native plants. They also hunted deer, turkey, fish, and smaller game animals. The nearby rivers provided additional food resources, including mussels and aquatic plants. Archaeological evidence shows they stored surplus food in granaries and pits. Their diet supported a large urban population and allowed for the development of specialized labor and leadership classes.
