What is Cahokia?

Cahokia refers to the remains of an ancient pre-Columbian Native American city located near present-day Collinsville, Illinois, just east of St. Louis, Missouri. It was the largest and most complex urban settlement north of Mexico before European contact. The city thrived between 1050 and 1350 CE, and its ruins are preserved as the Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site. The site covers about 2,200 acres and includes numerous earthen mounds. Cahokia is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its cultural and historical importance.
