What is Westminster Hall and why is it important?

Westminster Hall is the oldest surviving part of Westminster Palace, dating back to 1097. It was originally built for royal feasts and state occasions and later used for significant historical trials, including those of Guy Fawkes and King Charles I. Today, it hosts major ceremonial events, such as addresses by foreign dignitaries and the lying-in-state of prominent national figures. Its grand timber roof is an architectural marvel.
