What role did Versailles play in the French Revolution?

Versailles was deeply connected to the early stages of the French Revolution. In October 1789, a mob of angry citizens, mostly women, marched from Paris to Versailles demanding bread and reforms. The event, known as the Women’s March on Versailles, led to the royal family being forced to return to Paris. This marked the end of the monarchy’s dominance from Versailles and the start of its decline. The palace was subsequently abandoned and fell into disrepair. It later became a museum and symbol of France’s royal past. Today, it serves as both a reminder of opulence and revolution.
