Two of the most venerated figures in British Christianity are buried in Durham Cathedral: Saint Cuthbert and the Venerable Bede. Saint Cuthbert’s shrine lies behind the high altar and was a major pilgrimage site during the Middle Ages. His body was moved to Durham by monks fleeing Viking invasions. The Venerable Bede, an 8th-century scholar and historian, is buried in the Galilee Chapel at the west end of the cathedral. These tombs contribute significantly to the cathedral’s religious and historical significance.
