What was the Colosseum used for?

The Colosseum was primarily used for gladiatorial contests, public spectacles, animal hunts, executions, and mock naval battles. These events were often sponsored by emperors or wealthy citizens to gain public favor. Spectacles at the Colosseum were massive in scale and could involve hundreds of performers or animals. The entertainment served both political and social functions in ancient Rome. It was a central part of Roman culture for several centuries.
