When was the Colosseum built?

Construction of the Colosseum began in AD 72 under the emperor Vespasian and was completed in AD 80 by his son Titus. Some additional modifications were later made by Emperor Domitian. The amphitheater was built on the site of Nero’s private lake, as a gesture of returning land to the people. Its construction used concrete and stone, showcasing advanced Roman engineering. The Colosseum was the largest amphitheater ever built in the Roman world.
