Who built Cahokia and when?

Cahokia was built by the Mississippian culture, a Native American society known for its advanced agriculture, complex political structures, and large-scale earthworks. The city reached its peak around 1100–1200 CE, when it may have housed 10,000 to 20,000 residents, making it larger than London at the time. The builders of Cahokia constructed massive mounds, some for ceremonial purposes and others as platforms for buildings. Their society was highly organized, and they developed extensive trade networks across North America. Cahokia's rise and fall remain subjects of ongoing archaeological research.
