Durham Cathedral was built by Norman monks under the leadership of Bishop William of St. Calais, shortly after the Norman Conquest of England. Construction began in 1093, replacing an earlier Anglo-Saxon church on the site. The project was funded and supported by the Norman monarchy and church authorities as a symbol of their authority in the region. The cathedral was largely completed by 1133, although various additions and restorations have been made over the centuries, including the towers and chapels.
