Why does the Tower of Pisa lean?

The tower leans because of unstable foundation soil beneath its base. Shortly after construction began in the 12th century, the soft, clay-rich ground caused one side of the tower to begin sinking. Despite several attempts to correct the tilt over the centuries, the lean remained and even increased, becoming the tower’s most famous feature. Engineering efforts in the late 20th and early 21st centuries have stabilized the lean to prevent collapse.
