Petra was largely forgotten by the Western world for centuries until it was rediscovered in 1812 by Swiss explorer Johann Ludwig Burckhardt. Disguised as a Muslim pilgrim, he gained access to the site and shared its wonders with European scholars and explorers. Since then, Petra has captured the imagination of archaeologists, historians, and travelers worldwide.
