What was the purpose of the buildings in Petra?

Petra’s structures served various functions, including tombs, temples, living quarters, public buildings, and marketplaces. Many of the carved facades were elaborate burial sites for Nabataean elites. The city also had an amphitheater, ceremonial altars, and even a sophisticated water system that supported agriculture and daily life in the desert environment.
