Who built Petra and when?

Petra was built by the Nabataeans, a nomadic Arab people who settled in the region around the 4th century BCE. They developed Petra into a prosperous city by controlling trade routes that passed through the Arabian Peninsula. The Nabataeans were skilled engineers who constructed advanced water systems and monumental architecture. The city reached its peak in the 1st century CE before gradually declining under Roman rule and later earthquakes.
