Croatian is the official language, but in tourist hot spots—think Dubrovnik, Split, Hvar—most people speak enough English to get you by. In northern Istria, you might hear some Italian, and German occasionally pops up too. It’s polite (and pays off) to learn a few basic phrases, even if it's just “hvala” (thanks) or “molim” (please). Most signs in touristy zones are bilingual or English-friendly, so it’s fairly easy to navigate. You’ll get by fine with Google Translate as backup.
