The official language in Guatemala is Spanish. It’s spoken by most of the population and used in all official settings. Alongside Spanish, there are over 20 Mayan languages still actively spoken, like K’iche’, Q’eqchi’, and Mam. In rural areas, these Indigenous languages play a key role in community life. English is also understood in tourist regions and among younger people. The mix of languages shows Guatemala’s deep cultural roots. Learning a few Spanish words can really enhance your travel experience there.
