The official language in Laos is Lao. It’s closely related to Thai and uses a unique script derived from ancient Khmer. Most people speak Lao in daily life, though regional dialects vary across the country. In cities and tourist areas, English is becoming more common, especially among younger people. French, a remnant from colonial times, is still used in some schools and official settings. Many ethnic groups also maintain their own local languages. Lao unites the country’s diverse cultures with a shared sense of identity.
