Freddie Mercury was born as Farrokh Bulsara, which surprises a lot of people who only know him from his Queen days. He grew up mostly in Zanzibar and later went to boarding school in India, so his early life was pretty international. His family was of Parsi heritage, and they followed Zoroastrian traditions, something Freddie stayed connected to even after becoming a rock icon. When political unrest hit Zanzibar in the 1960s, his family moved to England, which basically changed his entire life path. Once in London, he leaned hard into music and art, and that’s where his unique style really started to form. People sometimes forget how much those multicultural roots shaped his personality and performance style. It’s honestly one of the cool layers behind his whole larger-than-life rock persona.
