Bowie was born in Brixton, a neighbourhood in London, and later grew up in the suburb of Bromley. His family wasn’t wealthy, but they were very supportive of his creative interests. He became obsessed with music early on and even took up saxophone lessons as a teen. Bowie said that growing up in post-war London gave him a sense of restlessness and a desire to stand out. He hung out with friends who also loved art and performance, which helped shape his early identity. His childhood neighbourhood wasn’t glamorous, but it pushed him to imagine bigger worlds. That imagination eventually fed into all the characters he created as an adult.
