Kamala’s mother, Shyamala Gopalan, was an immigrant from India and a respected cancer researcher. Her father, Donald Harris, is an economist originally from Jamaica. She has one younger sister, Maya Harris, who is also involved in law and politics. Kamala is married to Doug Emhoff, the first Second Gentleman in U.S. history. She’s also a stepmom to Doug’s two kids, Cole and Ella, whom she affectionately calls her “Momala.” Her family plays a big part in her public story, especially her mother’s influence.
