How did Jane Austen publish her books?

Jane Austen first published her novels anonymously. Her early books simply said they were written by “A Lady.” This was common for women writers back then. Her family helped cover some publishing costs. The books sold well enough to encourage more writing. Over time, her reputation slowly grew. Her name became famous only after her death.
