The most comfortable times to visit Joshua Tree National Park are usually fall and spring, when daytime temperatures sit roughly between comfortable 70s and 80s °F (20s °C) and nights are cool. Summer in the desert can be brutally hot, especially for hiking, with temperatures often well over 100°F, so if you go then you’ll want to stay cool and hydrated and do activities in early mornings or evenings. Winter can actually be a great season too — it’s not as hot, but nights get pretty chilly and sometimes close to freezing, so bring warm layers if you’re camping. Holidays, weekends, and spring break weeks (like March through mid-April) often make the park very crowded with lots of cars and busy trails. If you want fewer people around, try going mid-week or during the hotter summer days when typical visitors stay home. Always check the weather forecast before you head out because desert weather can shift fast with heat, wind, or even rain.
