Kent County is located in the central region of Michigan. The county seat of Kent County is Grand Rapids. The total area of the county is about 872 square miles. Formed in 1831 from part of Mackinac County and unorganized territory, today Kent County counts over 658 thousand inhabitants. The county is named after New York jurist James Kent, who represented the Michigan Territory in its dispute with Ohio over the Toledo Strip.
