What is the Mont Blanc Tunnel?

The Mont Blanc Tunnel is a 11.6-kilometer (7.2-mile) road tunnel that runs beneath Mont Blanc, connecting France and Italy. Opened in 1965, it is one of the longest road tunnels in the world. It greatly reduced travel time between Chamonix and Courmayeur. The tunnel is a vital trade and travel route but also requires strict safety measures due to its length. It remains an engineering achievement of the 20th century.
