UNGA Begins: Wars, Human Rights, and Climate at Forefront of Global Agenda

The 80th United Nations General Assembly opened with a theme of unity and peace, but the agenda reflects pressing crises rather than celebration. Key topics include the Gaza war’s humanitarian toll, Ukraine’s diplomatic battle with Russia, and Iran’s contentious nuclear program. Leaders will also address climate change, women’s rights (notably on the 30th anniversary of the Beijing conference), the war in Sudan, and tensions between the U.S. and Venezuela. A search for António Guterres’s successor as Secretary-General by end of 2026 further adds to the diplomatic stakes. Speeches begin with Brazil followed by the U.S., then other nations based on status and request timing, each encouraged to keep remarks concise.
