U.S. and China Reach Framework Deal on TikTok to Avoid Shutdown

The U.S. and China reached an agreement allowing TikTok to remain operational in the U.S. under a transition to some form of U.S. controlled ownership following intense scrutiny and legal threats. The deal comes after a 2024 law mandated ByteDance, TikTok’s Chinese parent company, to divest its U.S. assets or face a ban. Under the framework, details of ownership, responsibility for data privacy, and cooperation on illicit content are among the issues to be finalized. A short extension of the deadline may be granted due to substantial progress in negotiations. President Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping are expected to speak to further solidify the terms, while concerns remain about enforcement and oversight.
