An investigation by legal experts and anti-trafficking advocates reveals sweeping cutbacks within major U.S. agencies—including State, Justice, Homeland Security, Labor, and Health & Human Services—in their efforts to combat human trafficking and child exploitation. Offices have experienced staffing reductions, grants have been delayed or canceled, and priorities have shifted toward immigration enforcement rather than investigating trafficking crimes. At the State Department, more than 70% of the workforce in the office tracking trafficking (TIP office) has been reduced. Critics warn that these changes undermine decades of progress in supporting survivors and prosecuting perpetrators. The Trump administration maintains it remains committed to the fight, but many experts say the retreat has already opened gaps in protections.
