How did Haiti become the first Black republic?

Haiti’s independence story is one of the most epic in world history. Enslaved Africans rose up against French colonial rule in 1791 and fought for over a decade in one of the most successful slave revolts ever. Leaders like Toussaint Louverture and Jean-Jacques Dessalines helped defeat Napoleon’s troops, shocking Europe at the time. In 1804, Haiti declared independence, becoming the first nation led by formerly enslaved people. That victory inspired freedom movements around the world, though it came with huge costs — isolation, debt, and retaliation from colonial powers. Still, Haitians take deep pride in their revolutionary roots. It’s why you’ll hear the phrase “Haiti, the land of liberty” said with real emotion.
