What should a visitor know about the scenic or travel highlights of the Rhine?

If you’re thinking of visiting the Rhine, you’re in for a treat: one top highlight is the Middle Rhine Valley between Koblenz and Bingen — UNESCO-listed and packed with castles, vineyards and that fairy-tale river bend look. The Rhine Falls near Schaffhausen in Switzerland are the largest waterfall in Europe by volume and totally worth the detour. You’ll also find wine routes, fortress towns, riverside promenades and ferry rides that let you soak it all in. Many people simply hop on a boat for an hour or two and drink in the views, but you could spend days exploring tiny villages, sampling Riesling and taking in sunset reflections. Be prepared for lots of photo stops, relaxed villages and strong wine culture. It’s more than a cruise—it’s a journey through landscapes, history and local lifestyle.
