Why is the Rhine so culturally and historically important?

The Rhine has packed a lot of history — from Roman times, when the Romans used it as their frontier, to being a massive symbol in German legend like in the “Nibelungenlied.” During both world wars its banks were strategic, and after that it became an emblem of European economic union and cross-border cooperation. The river helped industrial Europe boom by providing a major transport route for raw materials and goods. At the same time, its valleys are dotted with castles, vineyards and folklore that capture the romantic side of Europe. Culture, trade, myth and power all swirl around its waters. Visiting its banks you feel that layered richness of past and present all at once.
