The official languages of Tanzania are Swahili (Kiswahili) and English. Swahili is the national language and widely spoken across the country, acting as a unifying lingua franca among the many ethnic groups. English is used especially in business, higher education and government administration. Tanzania’s population speaks more than 120 local languages as well, reflecting its cultural diversity. Some of these include tribal and regional languages used in community and traditional contexts. On the islands of Zanzibar and Pemba, variants of Swahili influenced by Arabic are common. Learning even basic Swahili can greatly enhance a visitor’s experience.
