English is the official language of Uganda and is widely used in government, education and formal communications. Swahili has also been adopted as an official language to strengthen ties with neighbouring East African Community countries. In daily life, many Ugandans speak indigenous languages such as Luganda, Acholi, Runyankole and Lusoga, reflecting the country’s cultural diversity. Multilingualism is common, especially in urban areas where people mix languages for communication. Local languages are often used in community and family settings, preserving cultural identity. English and Swahili help bridge communication across different ethnic groups. Language diversity is a central part of Uganda’s social fabric and heritage.
