Kharg Island is basically the heart of Iran’s oil export system and one of the most important energy sites in the country. Around 90 percent of Iran’s crude oil exports are shipped through terminals on the island. Oil from several major Iranian fields is transported by pipelines to Kharg where it is stored and loaded onto tankers. The island has large storage tanks that can hold tens of millions of barrels of oil at once. Its deep-water terminals allow multiple supertankers to load at the same time, which makes exporting oil faster and more efficient. Because so much oil moves through this single location, it has major influence on Iran’s economy. If operations on the island stop, Iran’s ability to export oil would be severely affected.
