Why does Utah Lake have algae blooms?

Utah Lake gets algae blooms mainly because it has high levels of nutrients like phosphorus and nitrogen. These nutrients come from runoff, pollution, and natural processes. Warm temperatures and shallow water create the perfect conditions for algae to grow quickly. When blooms happen, they can produce toxins that are harmful to people and animals. That’s why warnings are sometimes issued during the summer months. Efforts are ongoing to improve water quality and reduce these blooms. Even with this issue, the lake is still widely used for recreation when conditions are safe.
