Why does Utah Lake look dirty or muddy?

Utah Lake often looks muddy because it’s very shallow and has a soft lakebed. Wind can easily stir up sediment from the bottom, making the water appear brown or cloudy. This doesn’t always mean the lake is polluted, even though it might look that way. The murky water actually blocks sunlight, which can help limit some harmful algae growth. Invasive species like carp have also disturbed vegetation, adding to the cloudy appearance. Because of these factors, the lake has a reputation for being “dirty,” even if that’s not fully accurate. It’s more about natural conditions than constant pollution.
