The county is named after Created as a compromise after a dispute between local Whigs and Democrats as to whether it should be named Clay or Jackson county. The county seat of Union County is Monroe. The county's area exceeds 640 square miles. Formed in 1842 from Anson County and Mecklenburg County, today Union County counts over 244 thousand inhabitants.
