Federal Government Inches Closer to Shutdown Amid Looming Deadline

As Congress reconvenes after its August recess, the threat of a government shutdown looms large, with a deadline looming at month’s end. Negotiations are tense despite Republican control, as Trump and GOP lawmakers work to maintain spending cuts enacted this summer under the so-called “Big Beautiful Bill.” At the same time, Trump faces mounting domestic and global pressures, including expiration of his emergency authority over the D.C. police by September 10, stalled peace talks between Russia and Ukraine, and legal challenges to his tariffs. Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s turbulent public health tenure and pending disclosures of Jeffrey Epstein files add further complexity. With so many pressing issues converging, September’s legislative calendar promises high drama and critical stakes.
