Harnett County is situated at the very center of North Carolina. The county is named after Cornelius Harnett (1723-1781), an American Revolutionary and delegate in the Continental Congress. The area of Harnett County is about 601 square miles. The county was founded in 1855 from Cumberland County, and it is populated today by 136 thousand residents.
